Most of us have seen heavy deposits of calcium carbonate scale creeping out of a pool heater. Pamukkale, a geological formation located in Turkey's inner Aegian region near the town of Denizil, takes calcium scale formation to a new level.

Sometimes referred to as the 8th wonder of the world, this remarkable feature is the result of geothermal energy promoting massive calcium carbonate deposits that spill down the hillside and form oyster-shaped bathing shells filled with hot water. Over 100 meters high with scores of unique soaking areas, the site is visited by thousands each year who lounge in the warm water.
