Houston Pool Combines Fire And Water

Downunda, Houston TX

There are three things that make this entire project special for me,” says Brett Hatfield, owner of Downunda, the Houston pool builder that built this award-winning gunite pool and spa on the shore of Lake Conroe in Conroe, Texas.

“No. 1 is the materials,” says Hatfield. “They really work with the project. They’re not overstated. I think they’re classical. The glass tile fits; the Turkish travertine fits. They’re absolutely beautiful.

“Next is the hand-beaten copper fire pots,” continues Hatfield. “The ambience created in the nighttime with the fire pots running and the water streaming out is absolutely stunning. There’s also 13 lights in the pool at different locations, and lights in the negative-edge trough that create an uplighting effect.

“Lastly, I love the overall feel of the project. I really like the geometry of it. It works in that space.”

With any luck, the people enjoying this space will not be working, as it’s a weekend home. The owners and guests will certainly have plenty of spots to rest and relax. They can put deck chairs in the water, and there’s also a tanning ledge, granite-veneered stools in the water near the bar area, and other benches in the pool.

The homeowners, who gave Hatfield quite a bit of freedom in the design process, mostly wanted their friends to be impressed when they saw the pool. “They were looking for the wow factor, so that’s what we gave them.”
