At first glance, it's easy to be swept up by the beauty of an exceptional pool or spa. The water, the setting, the materials and the architecture come together to create something that feels effortless.
Look a little closer, though, and another story begins to emerge.
Behind every striking finished project are countless decisions — how a pool responds to the land around it, how materials come together, how water moves through a space and how engineering challenges are solved without distracting from the design. It's where creativity and technical skill work in tandem, and where the smallest details can make the biggest difference.
Each year, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance Awards of Excellence recognizes projects that demonstrate that level of thoughtful design and execution. This year's honorees span a remarkable range of styles, settings and challenges, offering a glimpse at what pool and spa professionals around the world are creating today.
We are proud to announce the Gold winners, and be sure to stay tuned throughout the month as we continue publishing this year's results.

Perched high above the shoreline, this signature Sapphire pool traces the curve of the coastline with a sweeping, curved infinity edge that appears to spill directly into the inlet below. The glass-walled residence and covered outdoor living area extend right to the water's edge, creating a seamless flow between indoor comforts and the breathtaking West Coast setting. The all glass-tile interior shimmers in shifting shades of blue, giving the water remarkable clarity and depth while catching every change in coastal light. Along the vanishing edge, water slips silently over the radius wall, extending the horizon and framing uninterrupted views of forest, ocean and sky. At night, integrated color lights transform the water into a luminous ribbon, washing the infinity edge and adjacent spa with a soft, ambient glow that reflects off the glass tile like jewelry. Behind the scenes, a turbo clean circulation system keeps the surface pristine by sweeping debris toward hidden inlets, reducing maintenance and keeping the focus on the view. For those who want more than a leisurely float, built-in BADU SwimJets introduce a powerful adjustable current, turning the main pool into a private open-water training lane against the dramatic backdrop. Together, these features create a refined coastal retreat where engineering, performance, and West Coast scenery are held in perfect balance.
This project delivers a true "impossible site" pool that looks effortless yet is only achievable through a very high level of design and engineering integration. The water's edge is pushed as far as it can go — curved, cantilevered off the residence, and perched over a sheer drop — so the visual effect is a continuous sapphire band that fuses the architecture with the coastal horizon. At the same time, it is not just a viewpoint piece; it is a fully featured aquatic environment. The vanishing edge, glass tile interior, turbo clean system, BADU SwimJets and color lighting are all layered into a compact footprint without visual clutter, providing both resort‑style relaxation and serious swim capability.

Preserving the property's mature trees was a priority from the earliest stages of this project. Harold Leidner Landscape Architects helped design the home around the existing trees, while the pool was conceptualized as a focal point of the exterior and positioned to take advantage of the expansive views. Designed as a perimeter-flow pool, it features a 100% infinity edge. The result is a unified vision between the pool and home, with the pool also serving as a basin that supplies the trees with runoff water.
The project is a testament to blending the built environment with the natural landscape. Preserving the site's mature oaks while designing the home, pool and surrounding landscape to feel as though they had always been there was a collaborative process that took years to complete. The result is a cohesive, resort-worthy experience, secretly nestled in the heart of Dallas.

Casa Blau was designed to create a seamless connection between architecture, landscape and water. Set against a dramatic Costa Rican ocean view, the infinity pool follows the home's open indoor-outdoor design, with its vanishing edge appearing to merge with the horizon. A Tikal finish gives the water a deep, natural tone reminiscent of a cenote, while the integrated spa sits within the pool for a clean, uninterrupted appearance.
Behind that simplicity is a carefully engineered hydraulic system. The pool and spa occupy the same space but maintain independent water levels and circulation, with check valves preventing backflow between the two. A 5-HP pump supplies the high flow required to maintain an even, continuous overflow along the infinity edge, which also required precise leveling during construction. Pentair automation provides remote control of pumps, lighting, temperature and water chemistry. Together, the hydraulic engineering, integrated spa and precise overflow create a pool that feels as much a part of the surrounding landscape as it does the home.

What sets this project apart is the balance between architectural precision and everyday livability. The design incorporates a negative-edge basin, 360-degree spillover spa and illuminated laminar jets, creating layers of movement and reflection without making the space feel overly formal. Positioned between the home and cabana, the pool also helps connect structures at differing elevations while serving as both a visual centerpiece and a comfortable gathering space.
Achieving the finished look required close coordination of structural, hydraulic and water-feature systems. The negative edge and catch basin were engineered to maintain a consistent sheet of water, while the spillover spa required tight perimeter tolerances to produce an even overflow on all sides. Multiple systems, including filtration, laminar jets and other water features, were independently controlled and balanced, allowing the pool to shift between more active and ambient settings.
The result is a cohesive outdoor environment where the technical complexity remains largely behind the scenes. Reflective water, subtle movement and carefully integrated features give the space a sculptural quality, while its layout remains inviting and functional for gatherings, celebrations and everyday use.

The property's expansive marsh view heavily influenced the overall design. A spillover water feature was positioned to reflect and enhance the surrounding landscape, while fire bowls help frame the view. Tiered hardscape, terracing and thoughtful spatial planning transform the naturally sloped yard into a functional and inviting outdoor living environment. The custom pool, water features, putting green and lush landscaping create a tropical, resort-inspired atmosphere while maintaining a strong connection to the surrounding native ecosystem. Artificial turf integrated within the coral stone hardscape helps soften the transition between the manicured outdoor living areas and the natural marsh edge beyond.
The project also reflects the close collaboration required to bring a complex design together. From planning and engineering through installation and finishing details, the design/build team coordinated the many systems and intricate elements throughout the property. The finished space complements both the architecture of the home and the character of the site, while encouraging recreation, gathering and everyday outdoor living. Throughout, a high level of craftsmanship, creativity and coordination helped bring the overall vision to life.

The clean, contemporary appearance of this vanishing-edge pool required considerable precision behind the scenes. Multiple planes along the perimeter beam were finished with 7mm porcelain tile, supported by a custom-fabricated stainless steel tray system that allows the coping to cantilever properly over the trough. Mitered coping on the step treads adds another refined detail, with LED strip lighting tucked beneath the riser overhang to illuminate the broad stairways after dark.
With its crisp lines, elevated waterline and carefully integrated lighting, the finished project appears remarkably simple despite the complexity required to achieve it. The numerous structural, finish and lighting details demanded close coordination throughout construction, resulting in a sleek aquatic environment that reflects both technical precision and a strong commitment to craftsmanship.

Tucked symmetrically into the home's contemporary courtyard, this vanishing-edge pool was designed as an extension of the architecture itself. The 18-foot infinity edge and flush-integrated spa are clad in obsidian black tile, giving the watershape a monolithic appearance while creating a reflective surface that mirrors the home's warm wood siding and expansive glass. A seamless Techo-Bloc deck and custom coping reinforce the project's clean geometry and restrained material palette.
Achieving that simplicity required exacting layout and construction precision. The pool had to align closely with the home's architectural lines while maintaining the proportions and elevations necessary for the vanishing edge and integrated spa. The contrast of dark water, black tile, light decking and warm wood creates a dramatic yet cohesive courtyard centerpiece, demonstrating how a limited palette and carefully controlled details can make a powerful architectural statement.

The community lake serves as the natural focal point of this vanishing-edge pool, with the design carefully aligned to the home's architecture and major centerlines to create a balanced, cohesive composition. A series of terraced levels provides distinct spaces for gathering and entertaining while preserving uninterrupted views across the water. Custom ironwork adds a refined architectural detail that further distinguishes the setting.
Significant elevation changes made grading and structural coordination especially important. Early collaboration with the home builder and engineering team helped establish the retaining walls, elevations and overall site layout before construction progressed. The result is a pool, hardscape and landscape that respond naturally to the property's topography while maintaining the strong visual connection to the lake beyond.

Designed as an extension of the home's distinctive circular architecture, this pool follows the same radius and rhythm rather than relying on a conventional form. The pool, spa and catch basin were carefully shaped and positioned to reinforce that geometry, creating a strong visual relationship between the watershape and the residence.
The edge treatment adds another layer of complexity. One portion of the pool incorporates a rim-flow edge that preserves the circular form, while the other transitions into a vanishing edge that responds to the property's elevation and views. Small-format ½-inch-by-½-inch tile was used along the curves and edge details, allowing the transitions to be finished with a high degree of precision.
The elevated, sloping site also required careful structural and layout coordination. Significant elevation changes, soil considerations and the distance between the pool and home made maintaining accurate alignment especially important. Double-curtain steel reinforcement addressed the structural demands of the site, while the hydraulic system had to accommodate two distinct edge conditions within one cohesive design.
Despite the complexity behind it, the finished pool feels graceful and naturally connected to the home. Its custom geometry, dual-edge design and detailed tile work combine architecture, engineering and craftsmanship in a way that feels intentional rather than overly complicated.

This design-build project stands out for the way the pool directly reflects the home's modern architecture. Rather than simply complementing the residence, the watershape was carefully designed around its geometry, with specific angles calculated to match the roof slopes and reinforce the home's strong architectural lines. Among its most distinctive features are an acrylic pool window positioned directly above the putting green and two "floating" swim-up bars, each wrapped on all sides — including below the waterline — in porcelain and paired with eight granite-capped barstools.
The material palette was equally intentional. Raised veneered walls were finished with the same wood paneling used around the home, while ivory porcelain was carried through the coping, waterline, decking and steps to complement the residence's light-colored modern brick. Large-format black mosaic tile accents echo the home's black metal elements, helping tie the architecture and waterscape together.
Despite the project's scale and number of features, the finished backyard feels cohesive rather than overworked. From the roofline-inspired geometry to the acrylic window, floating bars and coordinated finishes, each element reinforces the architecture instead of competing with it. The result is a striking example of careful design, craftsmanship and execution coming together in one unified outdoor environment.

This large-scale perimeter-overflow pool stands out for its combination of refined materials, technical precision and meticulous craftsmanship. Both the pool and spa were finished entirely in hand-laid mosaic tile, requiring extensive surface preparation and careful installation to maintain consistent alignment and clean transitions across the entire watershape. The expansive reflective surface further heightens the effect, giving the pool the polished character of a luxury resort while remaining closely tied to the residence.
Another distinctive element is the use of Mexican river rock within the overflow basin. In addition to concealing the collection system, the natural stone introduces texture and contrast against the highly finished mosaic tile and surrounding architecture. The interplay between the smooth water surface, detailed tilework and organic stone helps soften the scale of the project and connect the pool to the landscape.
Achieving the seamless perimeter-overflow effect required close coordination of hydraulics, elevation control and finish work. Despite the engineering and construction complexity involved, the finished environment appears effortless. The pool, landscape and hardscape read as one cohesive composition, balancing sophisticated performance with a refined, timeless aesthetic.

This tropical oasis project initially started as a renovation of an existing pool, which would include replacing the deck and adding a spa. However, early into the renovation, the homeowner decided to replace the pool entirely in order to bring it closer to the house. The spa had already been built, so the Almar Jackson Pools team was challenged with designing a new pool around the spa in place.
Engineering was crucial to the success of this large grotto and rock waterfall pool, as the design incorporates several elevation changes — a sunken fire pit area, a small area of natural grass for the family dogs, and a small built-in pond for the homeowner's baby alligator rescues. The spa is seamlessly incorporated into the final design, finished with capstone and a bubbling rock spillover to match the grotto in the pool.
With a beach entry, swim-up tiki bar and a custom alligator mosaic placed in the deck, this outstanding feat in construction, engineering and design brings the tropics to the backyard.

This residential project delivers more than a backyard getaway — it's a resort-scale residential water program built for daily entertainment, family gathering and continuous use. Comprised of a freeform pool with naturalistic boulder construction concealing two integrated water slides, a circular flagstone-finished island anchoring an all-tile spa and twin wrought-iron arched bridges connecting the island to the surrounding deck, this winning project transports the homeowners to their vacation destination just one step out the door.
Of course, the massive scale of this project meant the team faced a number of challenges. The rockwork had to read as a continuous, natural-stack waterfall while concealing the two water slides, the plumbing for the falls themselves, and the upper grotto's fire feature. Boulder selection, placement and structural reinforcement had to be coordinated so the visible stone composition never gave away the engineered geometry underneath. The result is a testament to the possibility of construction and design.
A continuous lazy river encircles the island, two additional river runs delivering current and motion through the body of the pool, while a wet-deck lounging shelf for submerged seating sits directly off the main deck level. When it comes to luxury, this pool is an undeniable winner.

This 86 square-meter freeform pool was built using the shotcrete method, which the designers say allowed for maximum design flexibility while ensuring strength and long-term durability. Measuring 10 by 5 meters, this project resembles a natural lagoon, an effect enhanced by its gently sloping floor that reaches a depth of 1.8 meters.
The main challenge of this project was translating a highly emotional client vision — recreating the atmosphere of island travels — into a tangible, aesthetic, technical and durable reality. Designing a freeform pool inspired by the natural lines of lagoons required meticulous work on the curves to achieve a fluid and organic result, avoiding any artificial appearance. Each contour was carefully shaped to evoke the natural movement of water and sand.
More than just a pool, this project is a complete escape environment designed to disconnect users from their immediate surroundings. The beach-entry effect, achieved through the semi-submerged area and micro-pebble finish, is the project's signature feature. It provides a smooth transition between dry land and water, reminiscent of natural lagoons.
Most of all, the combination of natural aesthetics with advanced technologies — eco-friendly water treatment, high-performance filtration and smart management — results in a complete project where comfort, innovation and escapism come together to deliver a unique experience worthy of the finest destinations.

Central Florida is no stranger to award-worthy pool construction, but this freeform pool raises the bar with its clean lines, innovative design and attention to detail. The client asked for a contemporary architectural pool in the main elevation of the home, as well as a rock grotto and freeform pool in the lower elevation near the lake. Proximity to the lake brought up specific challenges, requiring extensive soil remediation, compaction and dewatering. Even so, the extra legwork was undoubtedly worth it, as the final result is a stunning mixture between tradition and modernity, between a backyard pool and a true oasis.
Due to the engineering loads and elevation differences, the team at Southern Pool Designs was forced to build the pool in phases. They excavated first, building the footers and substructure of the lower pool. Then came the construction of the lower shell, followed by the upper pool and spa.
The mixture of two completely different pool styles into a cohesive design gives this pool its competitive edge. The views from the main living area showcase a contemporary pool that complements the home's design aesthetic, while the lower pool and grotto provide a completely different view from the dock and lake — they bring the lake to the backyard.

Dragonstone makes an immediate impression with its bold mix of shape, color and custom detail. The freeform pool anchors the waterfront setting, while an all-glass-tile perimeter-overflow spa, sunken fire pit and fire-and-water bowls create distinct gathering points throughout the space. At the center of it all, a custom dragon mosaic gives the project its unmistakable identity and ties the design back to the client's personal vision. Beneath the finished setting, the project required extensive structural coordination, including more than 20 pilings to support the watershape and surrounding outdoor living areas without interfering with the existing seawall system. Altogether, the project balances visual drama, personalization and the technical demands of waterfront construction.
