Good article ("Applied Efficiency," Sept., page 61) but there are a few forward-thinking builders in this industry that have used all this technology since its inception. I built spas using 2.5-inch and 3-inch plumbing, ozone and two-speed pumps in the early '80s, saving my clients money. Dabbled with PV panels running a DC pump in the '90s for daylight hour pool circulation. I developed our "Gold" new construction pool design in 2000 and it is at least 70 percent (possibly better — I do not have a degree in physics) more efficient than my conventionally built pools. The pool is using a cover, LED lighting, VSP pumps and solar panels. It costs 15 percent more than my conventional pool but can return the investment in two or three years.
These are exciting times in the swimming pool design and construction industry with more innovation to come. Personally I cannot wait for the battery or storage cell that will store daytime PV generated electricity for use at night. That will be a game changer.
