The FlowRider Edge

Usually found at waterparks, hotels and even restaurants, FlowRider’s surf machines have become iconic for offering a non-coastal way to catch some waves or explore the basics of surfing. Since its origin in 1991, getting the FlowRider experience typically meant traveling to a public place and paying to use a commercial machine — but now you can have one installed right in your backyard.

While this isn’t the first instance of a wave generator becoming a part of someone’s home (there have been six private installations in recent years), the newest FlowRider Edge is designed to be a slightly more accessible option than the $850,000+ products you might find on display aboard a cruise ship.

Unlike their commercial wave generators in use around the world, the Edge offers a uniquely private single-lane, one-pump surf machine that fits right on the edge of a pool and uses the same filtration system. At the push of a button swimmers will be riding their very own wave, no ocean required.

With the unveiling of its most recent product, FlowRider also continues to uphold safety as the company’s top priority. The Edge’s inflatable ride surface and side walls are meant to contain the rider safely and when they wipe out, lead them directly into the pool. This makes wipeouts not only incredible fun, but safe, too! Imagine being able to transition from surfing to sliding into your swimming pool all within seconds. It’s like a surf lesson, a waterpark ride and a dip in the pool combined into one exhilarating experience.

Now a convenient inland surf doesn’t have to require traveling to the nearest resort or flowboarding-themed restaurant (yes, that exists!), though the price won’t be cheap. But if you happen to be in the market for some updates on a high-budget backyard, FlowRider is confident that owners of the Edge will be the talk of the town. As the company says on its website, “Good luck keeping the neighbors out of your backyard now.”
