On August 25, five people sustained injuries from an electrocution accident in their backyard swimming pool in Indiana. Those affected include two parents, their two kids and one of their friends.
“According to the report, they felt a vibration in the water, and the dad yelled to shut the pump off,” says Travis Yike, Logansport PD chief of police in a statement to CBS4 News and FOX 59.
All five were shocked by the live current moving through the water before the pump was flipped off. Two of the injured were found unresponsive by EMT’s arriving at the scene. At least one of the minors involved is still in the hospital, but law enforcement assures the public that everyone involved is expected to recover.
In the midst of the events, a heroic act by one of the five “may have saved the lives of the others,” according to Yike.
The 16-year-old teenage boy works as a local lifeguard. Despite being shocked and injured himself, he managed to pull out his family members and his sister’s friend from the pool.
“If it wasn’t for the heroic acts of a 16-year-old juvenile that was involved in this, it may have turned out a lot different,” Yike says.
After investigation, the police determined the culprit of the electrocution to be a wire on the pool pump that was pinched by the pool’s ladder. The pinching broke its protective cover, which exposed the wire to the water. No criminal activity is suspected.
“It’s an unfortunate accident but fortunately everyone is doing okay,” Yike says.
