Absolutely Amazing
In a city sprinkled with some 275 water fountains, this newest feature designed by Crystal (formerly Crystal Fountains) stands out among the rest. "This is probably the most sophisticated and technologically advanced water feature in Moscow," says Robert Mikula, Crystal's Associate Director – Special Projects.
The outdoor water feature sits at the heart of the White Square Office Center, and is designed to complement the architecture of the office center and serve as a visual and physical focal point at the terminus of three major pedestrian corridors. Finished entirely in black granite, the fountain is a raised water table with a 20-foot diameter and a decorative granite perimeter.
During the day, the feature works as a reflecting pool. "The black background enhances water reflectivity and provides an illusion of depth," says Mikula.
The feature's pattern of 16 lotus leaf forms — inspired by ironwork designs found in the nearby subway station — are set within the water table to create an elegant display. These patterns are revealed as water slowly drains to four medium and four large water voids. These shapes fill to create an alternate plane of water that contrasts with the main overflow level. "This produces a striking visual effect, both at ground level and when seen from above," says Mikula.
In the evening, the feature comes alive with colorful shows of water shapes. The fountain is highlighted by Crystal's LED ring lights, a Dynamite Blast Jet and Choreoswitches, as well as water voids and perforated stainless-steel illumination diffuser plates.
Traditionally, fountains in Moscow are turned off during winter months, but the goal is to have this feature operate year-round. The water system will be winterized from October through April, but the LED lights will be fully operational, creating colorful visual displays throughout the year.
