Beginning in October, AQUA brings a splash of humor with monthly cartoons from Jerry King. Meet the cartoonist as he makes his debut.
AQUA: How did you get started as a cartoonist, and what drew you to the pool and spa industry?
Jerry King: I was always bored in school, so I drew to keep myself entertained. Over time, my doodles improved — eventually, companies began buying my cartoons. That led to opportunities with Disney, American Greetings, The Wall Street Journal and hundreds of other newspapers, magazines and websites.
When my wife and I moved from Ohio to Florida, we knew one thing for sure: We wanted a pool. We hired a company, watched the whole process unfold, and that’s when the cartoon ideas really started flowing. Now, I not only have an awesome pool, but also a steady stream of cartoon inspiration.
AQ: Where do you usually find inspiration for your cartoons?
JK: I find inspiration in everyday life, taking real situations and putting a humorous spin on them. For example, I once thought about saving money by maintaining my own pool, but I know I’d screw it up and end up spending more than if I just hired a professional. To me, almost everything has a funny side.
AQ: What can readers expect to see from you each month?
JK: Each month, I will draw about dealing with customers, owning and maintaining a pool, service, and everything else related to the pool and spa industry.
