A car caught cruising the streets of the tiny east German village of Blauenthal last summer sported some unique seasonal modifications: The seating area had been turned into a vinyl-liner swimming pool!
German police say a motorcycle cop couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw four men enjoying a cool, relaxing drive on a Sunday afternoon — in water up to their armpits.
According to an AP report, “Chemnitz police spokesman Frank Fischer says the men pulled over and jumped into a nearby river as soon as they saw the officer, but one later returned to claim his clothes. Fischer said Thursday that police were still investigating which of the men drove and whether he was drunk. He said the vehicle itself ‘probably didn’t have a road permit.’”
One can’t speak for the performance and handling characteristics, but as far as aquatic construction goes, the men used standard principles of vinyl-liner pool building. They had a solid shell and a nicely fitted liner, and did a creditable job of turning their BMW “convertible” into a wet pleasure-scape on wheels.
It’s always difficult to get a good liner seal around obstructions such as a gear shift and accelerator pedal, but there was no mention of leaks in the police report. Some might consider the untreated two-by-eight decking material a little down-home, especially when set in a high-performance German sportscar, but at least one designer consulted for this story found the contrast refreshing. The encircling plastic flower garland, however, went too far.
