On June 11, tragedy struck for the family of an El Paso couple in a Mexico resort. While lounging in a hot tub during their vacation in Puerto Peñasco, an apparent electrical charge caused the death of Jorge Guillen and left his wife, Lizette Zambrano, in critical condition.

Three days later on June 14, Zambrano filed a wrongful death lawsuit that alleged negligence of the several companies that are involved in the management, maintenance and operation of the Sonoran Sea Resort. She is seeking more than $1 million in damages for the fatal incident, attorneys say.

According to the lawsuit, Guillen entered the hot tub first and was “immediately exposed to an electrical current in the water.” When Zambrano ran to try and rescue her husband, she touched him and was shocked as well, falling into the hot tub.

Even when other visitors at the resort tried to help the couple, each attempt began to shock the rescuers, leaving Guillen in the hot tub for up to 10 minutes until resort staff arrived at the scene to get him out of the water. Zambrano had been grabbed by another guest and successfully pulled out of the hot tub.

Zambrano’s lawsuit states Casago, LLC., Casago International, LLC., and High Desert Travel, LLC. as defendants.

“At no time prior to this, did defendants seek to engage the emergency shutoff for the hot tub or attempt any rescue of either Jorge or Lizette,” the lawsuit reads. “Jorge was being electrocuted and drowned under water for 10 minutes.”

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the lawsuit goes on to say that Guillen’s “death has deprived Lizette of the love and society of her husband, and the right to that affection, solace, comfort, companionship, and assistance…Mr. Guillen’s death has caused plaintiff (Zambrano) and his children to suffer the loss of his care, advice, maintenance, services, counseling, and all other damages.”

According to KTSM, Zambrano has since been transported from Mexico to continue to be treated in the United States.
