Move over, Ariel. The chance to be a mermaid is no longer a fairytale (make that "fairy tail") thanks to the Sirenas Mediterranean Academy, located in Tarragona, Spain.
As the Washington Post reported last summer, the Sirenas Mediterranean Academy was founded in 2013 by Susana Seuma. A former salesperson, Seuma suffered a shattered leg from a car accident and needed a less physically demanding position. That's when she decided to turn to her lifelong dream — being a mermaid — and made that her job instead. Today, she runs Sirenas and helps aspiring mermaids achieve the same dream.
Sirenas, which bills itself as the first academy for mermaids and mermen, has so far served more than 500 mermaid hopefuls of all ages from all over the world. Classes focus on the mythological roots of mermaids and tritons, a comprehensive lesson in how to float and swim with a monotail, games and a certificate of class completion.
"I've seen the movie 'Splash,' but now I feel that I've lived it," said class participant Marta Fernandez in an interview with the Post.
