What Is MATE ROV?
The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) ROV competition is one of the world’s premier underwater robotics challenges. Each year, over 6,000 students from around the globe dive into the challenge — designing, building, and piloting remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to tackle real-world ocean scenarios. From simulating marine debris removal to conducting ecological monitoring, the tasks are rigorous, hands-on and deeply meaningful.
MATE ROV engages students from elementary through university levels. It doesn’t just teach robotics, it fosters teamwork, entrepreneurship and critical thinking. By modeling their teams as miniature “startup companies,” students learn how to problem-solve and manage resources in dynamic environments.
The initiative has its roots in the MATE Center, founded in 1997 with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s ATE (Advanced Technological Education) program. Its mission is to develop technical talent for high-skill fields like marine science and engineering, starting at the community and technical college level.
The 2025 MATE ROV World Championship will take place June 19–21 in Alpena, Mich., where top teams will gather for a high-stakes celebration of innovation and ocean advocacy.
